She earned her MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) from the University of Punjab in 1979 and her MCPS (Gynecology & Obstetrics) from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) in 1983. In 1992, she passed the MRCOG exam of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In addition, she oversees the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of KRL General Hospital in Islamabad. Previously, for about eight years, Dr. Tahira served as an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Fatima Jinnah Medical College in Lahore. She worked at Lady Willingdon Hospital as a Senior Registrar in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
